How About Living on an Oil Rig?
Jobs are scarce in the current economy, and lots of people have been unemployed for a long time. That's not going to change anytime soon unless consumer demand increases. After all, companies aren't going to hire people unless there's demand for their product.
Guess what kind of product is always in demand? Oil. We use oil for making plastics, all kinds of industrial chemicals, and, of course, for making gasoline. In the United States, we consume millions of gallons of gasoline every day.
In a market where we always need oil, we also always need oil rig workers. The jobs aren't for everyone; offshore oil rig jobs are hard work. They require being offshore for weeks at a time and the workers work around the clock shifts in inclement weather.
It's not a job for everyone, that's for sure. But there are some advantages to living on an oil rig:
- It's a unique life experience
- The job pays really well
- You'll meet interesting people
- You have lots of free time, as you're on the job for a few weeks and then off for a few weeks.
- You'll earn valuable job experience
Entry level offshore jobs are available, but you can't get them the way you ordinarily find jobs. You're not likely to see want ads in the newspaper for oil rig jobs, for instance.
